Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
