On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
